History of the Institute of Thermodynamics

The term "Thermodynamics" was only used (with difficulty) from about 1950 onwards in preference to the term "heat theory"

 

  • 1831 Establishment of the higher professional school.
  • 1847 Renaming to polytechnic school.
  • 1879 Acquisition of the rank of a "Royal Technical College". One of the five departments was dedicated to mechanical engineering.
  • 1922 Reorganization of the Technical University. The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is established.
  • 1934 First publication by Otto Klüsener on "Form and Size of Steam Bubbles" from the Institute for Combustion Engines and Technical Heat Theory at the Hanover Technical University.
  • 1949 Establishment of the Institute of Thermodynamics and Steam Boiler Engineering with Prof. Hausen as head.
  • 1959 Renaming in Institute of Thermodynamics and Process Engineering.
  • 1967 Prof. Rögner becomes head of the institute.
  • 1968 Separation into Institute of Thermodynamics and Institute of Process Engineering.
  • 1976 Move from the old Marstall building to Callinstrasse No. 36.
  • 1981 Prof. Rögner emeritus and Prof. Baehr is appointed as new head of the institute.
  • 1994 Prof. Kabelac becomes head of the institute.
  • 2001 Prof. Kabelac moves to the Bundeswehr University Hamburg on March 31, 2001. Prof. Seume takes over the provisional head of the Institute of Thermodynamics.
  • 2003 Prof. Dr.-Ing Andrea Luke becomes provisional head of the Institute of Thermodynamics as of 10/2003
  • 2011 Prof. Kabelac is back.
  • 2020 Move from Callinstrasse No. 36 to the new mechanical engineering campus in Garbsen.
  • 2025 Prof. Kabelac emeritus and Prof. Markus Richter is new head of the institute
